CARDIOVASCULAR DISORDERS - THE "SILENT" KILLER
Cardiovascular disorders have become increasingly common in Vietnam in recent years. Disorders such as aortic aneurysm and arterial stenosis have likened to ‘silent killers’ due to their, often fatal impact.
Aortic artery stenosis is one of the most common vascular disorders, especially with a higher risk in older adults. About 10% of cases occur in patients over 80 years old, about 1% in patients over 50 years old. Without timely intervention, aortic stenosis can lead to complications such as strokes or severe neurological, motor, and speech issues.
Aneurysm of the aorta is common in patients who smoke regularly, are diabetic, or have high blood pressure. Without prompt intervention, the aneurysm may rupture at the bulging site, posing a threat to the patient's life due to acute blood loss.
Venous insufficiency is a condition in which blood does not flow normally but flows backward, causing stagnation of blood circulation, increasing pressure on the veins. Patients feel uncomfortable, have difficulty moving, which can cause complications such as deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and leg ulcers.
Peripheral arterial disease is a condition where the lower limbs are not adequately supplied with blood. There are many causes of which the most common is due to arterial plaque. Although not life-threatening, the disease seriously affects the patient's life and work. If treated late, the internal, external, and post-treatment functional recovery faces many difficulties, and the patient is at risk of disability.
Blockage or narrowing of the leg arteries in diabetic patients: About 20% of diabetic patients have this condition, reducing blood flow to organs in the body. This makes prolonged infections difficult to treat, and chronic ulcers heal slowly. In cases of complete arterial occlusion, the patient's feet and toes are at risk of complete necrosis.
Dr. Alain Patrice Lebon - a French doctor with over 20 years of experience in Cardiology & Interventional Cardiology said: "Vascular diseases often progress silently with symptoms that can be confused with other disorders. About 70-80% of cases are only detected when the disease has progressed to a severe or life-threatening stage. Therefore, people over 60, young people with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, lipid metabolism disorders... should undergo regular screening for vascular disorders for timely treatment."
