Stroke - Serious but preventable with early screening
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
Stroke is the term doctors use when a part of the brain effectively dies because it goes without blood for too long. There are two types of strokes: ischemic stroke, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel in the brain, and hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding in the brain or surrounding area.
During a stroke, one or more areas of the brain can be damaged. Depending upon the area affected, a person may lose the ability to move one side of the body, the ability to speak, and see normally, or have general complications, such as:
- Difficulty eating and drinking, increasing risk of pneumonia or malnutrition
- Urinary tract infections
- Bleeding in the digestive system
- Pressure sores
- Falls
- Depression
According to Dr. Sabrina Stefanizzi Debuc, neurologist at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Íø, stroke prevention measures can significantly reduce the incidence of this disease and reduce chances of a stroke. Preventive solutions include:
- Medications: Different medications help reduce the risk of having another stroke. They include those to control high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and prevent blood clots. Different combinations of medications are used, depending on a patient’s health and medical history.
- Carotid artery revascularization.
- Lifestyle changes: In addition to medication therapy, lifestyle changes are also a key part of preventing another stroke. The most important include quitting smoking, avoiding or cutting back on alcohol, eating a healthy diet, limiting salt, and exercising regularly.
In addition to improving overall health, eating a balanced diet and getting regular physical activity can help with weight loss for the overweight. This can help with both high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which can increase a person's chance of a stroke.
